TJ Dillashaw Regains the Title
In a spirited and bitter two-round scrap, TJ Dillashaw shook off a first-round knockdown from Cody Garbrandt to regain the UFC men's bantamweight title.
A head kick and ground and pound forced a stoppage of the fight and Dillashaw erupted in celebration immediately afterward. Here is a look at the finish:
There was tons of bad blood between Dillashaw and Garbrandt heading into the bout because of the former's controversial exit from Team Alpha Male's camp. However, after the bout, the two men showed each other nothing but respect.
During the post-fight interview, Dillashaw announced his intentions to move down to 125 pounds to challenge Demetrious Johnson for the flyweight title to stop his streak. That's a major fight and a huge challenge for Johnson who is being regarded as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
The Thug Shocks The World
Whoa!! In one of the most beautiful upsets in the history of the UFC, Rose "Thug" Namajunas pull off the improbable victory in perhaps the most unlikely way en route to the UFC strawweight champion.
She came into the fight as the biggest underdog on the card and enduring all kinds of below board trash talk. Namajunas wasn't supposed to be able to strike with Joanna Jedrzejczyk, but she took the challenge head-on and scored an amazing stoppage win in the very first round.
After dropping Jedrzejczyk earlier in the frame with a right hand, Namjunas put the champion down for good. A nasty left hook put Jedrzejczyk on the canvas and forced her to tap from strikes. The MSG crowd and social media exploded.
Expect a rematch because of Jedrzejczyk's long tenure as champion, but the next bout will likely headline the card.
Wonderboy Unsolvable For Masvidal
Stephen Thompson's long-range striking presented a problem for Jorge Masvidal and he earned the unanimous-decision win.
The fight stayed standing the entire time, but Wonderboy outstruck Masvidal 70-42 over the three rounds. Rarely have we seen Masvidal beaten convincingly, but that's what Thompson did on Saturday. Thompson bounced back with a big win after a loss and draw with champion Tyron Woodley.
Because he's already faced Woodley twice, he's probably two or three wins away from getting another shot at the title. Masvidal came in ranked No. 4, but this is a matchup he probably loses 10 out of 10 times.
Costa Mows Down Hendricks
Paulo Costa blasted his way through Johny Hendricks to kick off the pay-per-view portion of the show. Hendricks was way too small and completely unable to withstand Costa's onslaught. The 26-year-old Brazilian launched bombs from the beginning of the bout and he looks prepared to take a major step up in competition.
He has everything he needs to be a superstar. He has the look, the skills, and the geographical backing to become a major deal in the sport.
Vick Smashes Duffy
In a bout that figured to be nip and tuck, James Vick proved himself to be the better lightweight fast riser. After a close first round, Vick took control in the second frame and punctuated his victory with a hard uppercut and ground and pound.
The referee stopped the bout with just one second left in the round.
Vick is now 12-1 and 8-1 in the promotion. He is headed for a Top 15 ranking. Vick owned a three-inch reach advantage and Duffy had no answer for the length. Vick asked for a number of ranked lightweights and after this win, he has some weight on his name.
Godbeer Wins Via DQ After Illegal Head Kick
Walt Harris was in control of his bout with Mark Godbeer, but he failed to yield after landing a low knee to Godbeer's groin. He worsened matters by throwing an egregious head kick that seemed to daze Godbeer.
The latter strike led to Harris' disqualification. It's hard to sympathize with Harris in this situation. It appeared he had ample time to at least pull back on the strength of the kick. He did not and it left the referee and officials no other choice.
OSP KOs Anderson With Hellacious Head Kick
Ovince Saint Preux took Saturday's fight with Corey Anderson on 10 days notice, but it didn't matter. After struggling to contain Anderson's wrestling through the first two rounds, OSP did this to Anderson in the third round.
Earlier, Ricardo Ramos scored a victory that I thought could be a late KO of the Year candidate, but this one might have topped that vicious finish. This was OSP's third straight win after losing three in a row. All three of those wins came via stoppage.
The previous two came via Von Flue Choke. OSP improved to 22-10 and Anderson drops to 10-4. It was Anderson's second loss in a row with both coming via stoppage. After the bout, OSP asked for a fight with Ilir Latifi at UFC 219. It would be his fifth in 2017 if his request is granted.
Brown Outworks Gall
In Mickey Gall's first real test against a quality opponent, he failed. The submission specialist who had defeated CM Punk and Sage Northcutt was beaten by Randy Brown who employed a balanced striking and grappling approach.
Brown stuffed both of Gall's takedown attempts and outstruck him 41-7 over three rounds. Gall fell to 4-1, but he still has some room for improvement. The win takes Brown to 10-2, but it's not the kind of win that will grow his stock.
Gall looks less of an opponent after losing his first real test. Thus the victory doesn't prove much for Brown. That said, it had to be sweet for the fighter who battles out of Queens, New York to win in front of the MSG crowd.
Blaydes Wins Bizarre Battle With Oleinik
After an exciting first round, the Blaydes-Oleinik bout ended in anticlimactic fashion. Blaydes had pounded Oleinik with uppercuts and ground and pound, but he grazed Oleinik's ear with an illegal kick as the latter was on all fours.
The referee stopped the bout because of the foul, but the strike barely landed.
After some confusion, Blaydes was awarded the TKO victory as Oleinik said he was unable to continue. Blaydes was fortunate to escape a disqualification, but morally, this was the right decision. Blaydes was in control after securing four takedowns and a knockdown in the first round, but Oleinik could have still been dangerous because of his submission skills.
Nonetheless, Blaydes improved to 8-1 in his career while the 42-year-old Oleinik loses some momentum and falls to 52-11.
Ramos Obliterates Zahabi With Spinning Elbow
In what has to be a late qualifier for KO of the Year, Ricardo Ramos knocked Aiemann Zahabi out cold with a spinning elbow.
The loss was the first of Zahabi's career and it moved Ramos to a 11-1 career mark. He's a perfect 2-0 in the UFC. The fight was very close before the KO. You could make the argument Zahabi had taken the first round with Ramos winning the second. Zahabi looked to be in control in the final round before he was zapped.
After the bout, Ramos asked for a ranked opponent. He may be a step or two away from that, but he definitely raised his stock.
